Beginning with real crowd sightings over Sacramento in November 1896, a much larger February–April 1897 wave sweeps the Midwest and Texas, drawing tens of thousands of witnesses — alongside at least two confirmed hoaxes, a faked photograph, and zero surviving physical evidence, six years before powered flight existed
Vandenberg AFB Missile Disabling Incident
An Air Force officer's camera crew claims their telescope filmed a disc-shaped object disabling a missile's dummy warhead with beams of light near Big Sur in 1964 — footage the test's own project engineer maintains actually shows decoy reentry vehicles and chaff, in a dispute AARO's 2024 review could not resolve either way

Solway Firth Spaceman Photograph
Fireman and amateur photographer Jim Templeton's snapshot of his young daughter on Burgh Marsh appears to show a bulky, faceless figure in white standing behind her — Kodak and the police reported no tampering; a theory endorsed by David Clarke in 2014 proposes the figure is his wife, overexposed and unnoticed, which the Templetons always denied
Todmorden Police Encounter
On-duty police constable Alan Godfrey sketches a rotating, diamond-shaped object hovering over a Todmorden road, then finds himself further along it with about 15 minutes missing; hypnosis months later produces an abduction story

The St. Clair County Triangle Sightings
Police officers in several towns near Scott AFB report a large, silent, lit triangle over the county radio before dawn; NIDS investigated without a conclusion, and a blimp remains the leading explanation
Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP)
Senator Harry Reid secures about $22 million for a DIA program (AAWSAP, also called AATIP) contracted to Robert Bigelow’s BAASS; revealed in 2017, it reshaped UAP disclosure, though Luis Elizondo’s role is disputed and AARO found AATIP was never an official DoD program

The Montayral Aerodrome Object
A witness parked near a small aerodrome watches a dark, perfectly motionless, silent shape hang in a clear sky for roughly 20 minutes before it vanishes the instant he looks away — GEIPAN's own hot-air-balloon hypothesis, the closest fit, fell short of 50% probability
The Montluel Cloud-Distorting Object
A witness on his balcony at 3am watches a silent, anthracite-grey rectangular object cross the sky in eight seconds and reports it visibly warping the clouds behind it — French air defense radar (CAPCODA) recorded no matching aircraft, and GEIPAN's investigators formally tested and rejected even hypnagogic hallucination and retinal afterimage as explanations
The Sainte-Foy-de-Peyrolières Five-Phase Sighting
A single witness describes a 20-second, five-phase sequence of cascading lights resolving into a rectangle, then a triangle, then a silent burst of speed — GEIPAN tested seven hypotheses and consulted its expert committee twice before closing it unexplained
The Bornel Conservatory Fireball
A retired couple watching television see a silent, flame-fringed orange fireball pass their conservatory; the husband alone reports it stopping, hovering and revealing a grey triangle. GEIPAN weighed a drone, sky lantern, aircraft and ball lightning, called the drone "the least bad," and classed it D1
The Crozon Peninsula Red Rectangles
A driver watches three identical, motionless red rectangular lights hover over a road junction ahead of him before accelerating away and vanishing almost instantly into the sky — the nearby French naval air base confirmed no aircraft were flying, and a Navy drone instructor said the lighting matched no known military drone
The Villers-lès-Luxeuil Triangle
A married couple driving separate cars at dusk both see a large, silent, dark triangle low over their village — radar shows a light aircraft landing at the nearby air base passing overhead at about the same time, but GEIPAN could not reconcile it with the dark triangular shape and size, and left the case unidentified
The Hem Ring-Light Triangle
A dog-walker watches three reddish, ring-shaped lights arranged in a triangle move silently in a straight line before switching off "as if extinguished" — GEIPAN found no example of a drone with matching toroidal lighting and closed it D1, unidentified
The Douai Prison-Adjacent Sighting
A woman stargazing in her garden near Douai's prison watches a sharp-edged, pinkish-orange triangle with yellow lights along its leading edges pass silently over her roof — GEIPAN rules out two airliners on military radar, but its best alternative, a meter-long drone, matches neither the shape nor the color
The Ruffec Repeating Light Arc
A witness watches a white light repeatedly arc across the same patch of sky in roughly six-second cycles for five minutes — GEIPAN systematically tested and eliminated a skytracer and ice-crystal reflections, calculated the exact solar geometry to rule out a Starlink flare, while real air traffic on the same heading remained the best, but unconfirmed, candidate
The Forêt-Fouesnant Electric Bar
A driver watches a silent, sharp-edged yellow "electric bar" with a fluorescent green light at its center hover, pivot to face her, stop, then depart — a field investigation and cognitive interview rated her testimony's consistency "rather good," and her car radio reportedly malfunctioned immediately afterward

The Flavin Domed Cylinder Sighting
A mother and daughter leaving Flavin watch a silent, car-sized craft with an ovoid skirt, a domed cylinder, and a rotating green light hover roughly four meters off the ground beside the road — gendarmes took formal statements the next day and a gendarme made a computer-assisted drawing, but no physical traces or radar anomalies were found
The Fauville-Évreux Radar Sighting
An Évreux Air Base duty officer tracks a fading red light for sixteen minutes while the base's own radar logs a faint, matching echo — GEPAN ruled out a helicopter or balloon and judged Venus unlikely, and the other radar, at Cinq-Mars-la-Pile, did not confirm the contact
The Taverny Triangle
An aviation enthusiast walking his dog watches a dark, silent triangle with three dim amber lights cross the sky against the Charles de Gaulle approach traffic — GEIPAN found a small drone or model compatible but very unlikely in town on a winter night, and left it unexplained
The Choisy-le-Roi Shape-Shifting Object
A driver stopped at a red light in this Paris suburb watches a stationary, porthole-lit cylindrical object surrounded by an orange glow climb, flip into an inverted-V, turn white, and vanish into cloud — investigators concluded no known object, not even a novelty balloon, matched the reported transformation
The Maffliers Dawn Object
A dog-walker watches a large, flat-bottomed, concave-topped white object hover low over a field at dawn before tilting and departing at speed — the sighting closely resembles a sunrise seen through cloud, except the reported direction was 54° off the sun's actual position, a gap GEIPAN's investigators, who visited the site twice, called impossible to attribute to simple estimation error
The Rixheim Course-Changing Light
A witness tracking a light he assumes is a satellite loses it for a second or two, then finds a light turning toward a nearby airfield and accelerating silently overhead — GEIPAN checked radar, Jupiter and a real satellite pass, ruled out all three, and notes it cannot say it was one light
The Angoulême Daylight Ovoid
A witness in his garden watches a matte-brown, ovoid shape cross the sky in complete silence in broad daylight — GEIPAN considered a meteorite entry during that year's Perseid peak but couldn't confirm it without a second witness
The Palau-del-Vidre Black Triangle
Two utility workers on an early-morning round watch a huge black triangle with a red light at its center pass low over their village's rooftops with no reported anti-collision strobes or position lights — GEIPAN's investigation found the case's evidentiary strength actually grew after the field enquiry, not weaker
The Étrelles High-Speed Object
Two on-duty gendarmes see two lights nearly overhead vanish at very high speed within a second or two; one also perceives a dark mass. GEIPAN rated both highly reliable and classed it D1, though a splitting fireball was recorded about five minutes later
The Neuvelle-lès-Lure Gamekeepers' Sighting
Three hunting wardens on a night anti-poaching watch see a silent triangle of violently flashing lights hang overhead, climb almost out of sight, return, light a red center and zigzag away — a Mirage flew over ten minutes later, audible and unlike the lights, and a next-day call to the air base found nothing on radar
The Fontiès-d'Aude Health-Effects Case
A couple watches a large, silent, dark object hover over their house and sweep the ground with light beams before departing; in the following days their dogs fell ill, a neighbor was hospitalized, and nearby vegetation appeared to wither — GEIPAN's investigation left the object unexplained, found no link between it and any of the reported effects, and gave ordinary explanations for most of them
The Port Vila Fishermen's Sighting

The Zonza Corsica Sighting
At a campsite on Corsica's southeast coast, a witness watches a huge dark circle with lights at its center, escorted by rows of smaller dark shapes, pass slowly and silently for ten minutes — he reported it to the gendarmerie the same day, and GEIPAN's checks of weather, satellites, aircraft and military radar found no explanation

Wealthy Worcester manufacturing executive Wallace Tillinghast tells the Boston Herald he has secretly built and repeatedly flown the world's first practical airplane, including a 300-mile night flight to New York and back around the Statue of Liberty; within days New England is flooded with sightings, peaking at 33 reports in a single Christmas Eve night, and the ten-week wave ends in February 1910 with no airship, no photograph, and no wreckage ever produced
The Australian Mystery Aeroplane Scare of 1918
Between March and November 1918, roughly 200 Australians — police, teachers, farmers, a headmaster, a decorated fighter pilot — report German aircraft over New South Wales and Victoria amid fears a raider was launching seaplane reconnaissance against an undefended coast; Australia's highest-ranking army officer orders the country's first coastal air–sea search, a young Charles Kingsford Smith files his own unexplained sighting from a Terrigal beach a decade before becoming the nation's most famous aviator, and the Royal Australian Navy's own surviving file records that no German aircraft was ever found, because none was ever there
The UK "Flying Saucer Working Party"
Set up in 1950 at the urging of Sir Henry Tizard, the Ministry of Defence's own chief scientific adviser, the five-man DSI/JTIC committee weighs a Meteor pilot's Portsmouth sighting (and a radar response it found unconnected) and test pilot Stan Hubbard's two Farnborough encounters before its June 1951 report — kept secret for half a century until researchers David Clarke and Andy Roberts recovered it in 2001 — attributes every case to misidentification, illusion or hoax and shapes Britain's flying-saucer policy for the rest of the Cold War
The Panama Canal Zone Radar Sighting
In March 1958, Flamenco Island and Taboga Island radars locked onto two objects circling Fort Kobbe that climbed from 2,000 to 10,000 feet in seconds when a searchlight touched them; only brief red and green lights were seen, and aircraft sent to look found nothing. Report IR-4-58 called the contacts “unexplainable” and the returns easily distinguished from cloud.
The Oskar Linke East German Landing Case
Village mayor Oskar Linke stayed silent for two years about the landed disc and two suited figures he and his 10-year-old stepdaughter Gabriele reported near Hasselbach, only swearing a notarized account in West Berlin in July 1952, after fleeing East Germany (in April 1951, by Gabriele's account) — a story that raced through the British, French, and Greek press into a CIA foreign-documents filing within weeks, while Project Blue Book's own index would later misdate the sighting by two years and bury it under "Not Cases."
The Gdynia Harbor UFO Incident
Named dockworkers really did watch a burning object fall into Gdynia's harbor on January 21, 1959, and a Polish Academy of Sciences meteoriticist really did investigate — but the "recovered alien body" that made this Poland's Roswell first appears nine years later in a foreign paperback citing no source at all, and no Polish document has ever confirmed it since
The Gemini IV / McDivitt Cylindrical Object Sighting
In orbit on Gemini IV, astronaut James McDivitt sees a white cylindrical object with a protruding rod — "like a beer can with a pencil sticking out of it" — and tries to photograph it; one of three astronaut sightings the 1969 Condon Report says have "not been adequately explained," though McDivitt himself later judged it probably ice or insulation shed by his own spacecraft
The "Chandelier" UAP
A CENTCOM infrared sensor recorded an eight-pointed, star-shaped thermal signature over the Persian Gulf with zero accompanying witness description, declassified in 2026 under the Trump administration's PURSUE program — and contributors to skeptic Mick West's Metabunk forum built a working optical simulation arguing the shape is camera diffraction spikes, not a physical object
The Immaculate Constellation Whistleblower Report
Whistleblower Matthew Brown's brief, delivered to Congress by journalist Michael Shellenberger and entered into the Congressional Record by Rep. Nancy Mace on November 13, 2024, alleges a secret Pentagon program consolidating UAP crash-retrieval imagery — but the U.S. Space Force specifically denies the program's name ever appeared in the 2018 wargame exercise Brown says he found it in
The Jake Barber "Skywatcher" Crash-Retrieval Claims
USAF veteran Jake Barber goes public on NewsNation on January 18, 2025 claiming involvement in the covert recovery of a "pearl-white, egg-shaped" object the size of an SUV, plus consciousness-based "summoning" attempts by his own Skywatcher Technologies team using a "Dog Whistle" signaling device and self-described psychic operators; a Defense Department spokesperson confirms AARO is investigating his claims, even as the Pentagon maintains it has found no verifiable evidence and Skywatcher's own promised data release has still not materialized more than a year later
The "Orbs Launching Orbs" Western United States Event
Near a redacted "sensitive national security site" in the western United States, six federal law enforcement agents in two-person teams reported a glowing orange "mother orb" releasing red orbs "like grapes being expelled from a basketball" over two nights; AARO's June 2026 memo, DOW-UAP-D077, judged roughly 60 percent plausibly attributable to military aircraft dispensing flares, but for the other 40 percent — including a red orb said to have hovered above a ridgeline for hours — found no known aircraft, holding "Unrecognized Technology (Pending)" as a provisional hypothesis and U.S. military technology as "plausible, inconclusive."
The UAP Disclosure Act (Schumer-Rounds)
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and Sen. Mike Rounds, joined by Marco Rubio, Kirsten Gillibrand, Todd Young, and Martin Heinrich, introduced a bipartisan bill modeled directly on the 1992 JFK Assassination Records Act — complete with a subpoena-empowered review board and federal eminent domain over contractor-held "technologies of unknown origin" — only to see both provisions dropped in conference under House opposition, leaving a scaled-back NARA records mandate enacted as Sections 1841–1843 of the FY2024 NDAA; stronger versions were refiled in 2024 and 2025.
The Kōfu Incident
Two second-grade cousins, Masato Kōno (Kawano) and Katsuhiro Yamahata, reported a silver, dome-topped disc landing in a Kōfu vineyard and a faceless, wrinkled, fanged humanoid that tapped one boy's shoulder twice; both mothers said they saw an orange glow in the vineyard minutes later, three vine posts were found down, and a teacher's radiation readings remain disputed — while an unrelated insurance saleswoman's contested sighting, first made public in December 1982, is often mischaracterized as the original witnesses returning to the site.
The Andersen Air Force Base UFO Sightings
Three UFO reports from Andersen Air Force Base, Guam, over seven years — a dawn December 1952 sighting of a silvery, flame-trailing object by a B-17 crew and airmen on the ramp, which Project Blue Book closed as "Probably Astronomical" (a meteor); 1st Lt. Ted Brunson's December 1956 F-86D pursuit of a round white light that out-turned him, which Blue Book left unidentified; and a November 1959 report of numerous sightings attributed to a base heritage history.
The 1981 Chinese Spiral Mass Sighting
On the night of July 24, 1981, a rotating spiral of silvery light was seen for several minutes across much of western and southern China, reportedly by millions; two Purple Mountain Observatory astronomers who analyzed the eyewitness reports reached different conclusions, and despite matching the visual signature of the later-confirmed 2009 Norway Spiral rocket-venting event, no specific matching launch has ever been identified.
The Wycliffe Well UFO Hotspot
A visitor sighting book on the roadhouse counter, said to descend from a logbook kept by WWII servicemen at this Northern Territory army farm and reportedly stolen around 1990, anchors the “UFO capital of Australia” legend; the often-repeated “formal RAAF investigation” traces only to unsourced promotional and blog content, and reported sightings dropped once the roadhouse was abandoned after a December 2022 flood.
The Taiwan Strait / Offshore Islands UFO Sightings
Beginning July 17, 1968, star-like objects were sighted daily at dusk, and sometimes before dawn, over Kinmen (Quemoy), Matsu and the Taiwan Strait. A three-officer Nationalist team investigated, and a U.S. Army (500th MI Group) report says it listed satellites, "flying saucers," electronic jamming devices and psychological-warfare balloons. The objects' straight courses "unaffected by wind velocities," and the team's labeling of the August 13 objects as "man-made satellites," point toward satellite passes.
The Tarija / El Zaire UFO Crash
A fiery object reported falling near the hill of El Zaire on the Bolivia–Argentina border, with an explosion later said to have broken windows tens of kilometers away; a geologist-led search found no crater or debris, and State Department cables found no match to a known space object and reported that Bolivian searches found nothing.
The Chulucanas Incident
During a religious procession honoring the Señor Cautivo de Ayabaca on October 13, 2001, crowds in Chulucanas, Peru reported orange lights — later described as eight spheres moving for hours — filmed by a local cameraman. Investigator Anthony Choy calls it the first case studied by Peru's Air Force UFO office, which never issued a written statement on it
The Popocatépetl Volcano UFO Sightings
Since sightings first spread among residents of Puebla and Tlaxcala on September 7, 1991, Mexico's federal disaster-prevention agency CENAPRED has operated public volcano-monitoring webcams that have repeatedly recorded luminous, maneuvering objects near the crater — footage explained case-by-case as meteors, aircraft, comets, and camera artifacts, but never studied by the agency as a single, decades-long pattern
The La Boca Cumayasa Sighting
Businessman Isidro Álamo, his wife, and a sailor aboard a fishing boat watch a large yellow object for nearly an hour just before dawn, reporting that a beam of light from the object seemed to respond when Álamo signaled it with his own flashlight; FOTOCAT curator V-J Ballester Olmos later matched the sighting, to the minute, against a declassified U.S. "Project Dogwood" barium-cloud rocket release logged the same predawn hour from Puerto Rico
The Matanzas Skies UFO Formation
A Radio Progreso reporter, and by his account Cuban Academy of Sciences meteorologists including one 42 km away, watched six or seven luminous, tailed objects cross the sky over Matanzas on December 21, 1993 — a sighting preserved only in a Foreign Broadcast Information Service translation of the broadcast, released by the CIA in 2011
The Jafr "Alien Invasion" Hoax
Jordanian newspaper Al-Ghad's April Fools' front page claims UFOs landed near the desert town of Jafr and ten-foot creatures emerged; local officials seriously weigh evacuating all 13,000 residents and security forces conduct an actual desert search before the newspaper is forced into a formal public apology
The Sinai Peninsula "Dogfight" UFO Sighting
Three named U.S. Army cavalry scouts of the 3rd Cavalry Regiment, watching from a remote Multinational Force & Observers post near the Israel-Egypt border, describe a large object and seven smaller lights "scuffling" like a dogfight before folding back together and vanishing; other posts reportedly confirmed the lights by radio, and one witness says a superior later told him to keep quiet
The "Jellyfish" UAP Over Al Taqaddum Air Base
An infrared sensor on a force-protection aerostat captured roughly seventeen minutes of a three-legged object cycling between black, gray, and white — footage that became base lore for years until AARO's 2025 case-resolution report assessed it as a cluster of balloons drifting on the wind; the on-scene witness says it never entered the nearby lake, as later claimed
The Betty Andreasson Luca Abduction
Following a January 25, 1967 power failure and pulsating light seen by her family, Betty Andreasson becomes the subject of investigator Raymond Fowler's sprawling, five-book, multi-decade case file — a 528-page investigation built on fourteen hypnotic regression sessions and voice-stress (PSE) tests, beginning with 1979's The Andreasson Affair and culminating in an entity named "Quazgaa," a nasal implant, and a mystical phoenix vision Betty received as a Christian religious revelation.
Truman Bethurum & the "Captain Aura Rhanes" Contacts
Highway equipment operator Truman Bethurum claimed eleven nighttime contacts, beginning July 27, 1952, with Captain Aura Rhanes of the planet Clarion, but named no independent witness, produced no photograph across three months of visits, refused a polygraph test, and placed Clarion in an impossible position behind the Moon before later moving it elsewhere.
The Daniel Fry / White Sands Contact
Aerojet General technician Daniel Fry claimed he missed a bus, walked into the White Sands desert, and met the unseen remote operator "Alan" of a landed saucer for a ride to New York and back, but failed a televised 1954 polygraph, later admitted deliberately changing his own book's encounter date, and still built the claim into Understanding, Inc., an organization of some sixty local units.
Elizabeth Klarer & the "Akon" Contact
Cambridge-trained meteorologist and pilot Elizabeth Klarer said she photographed an extraterrestrial's craft near her family's former farm in 1956, conceived his child at a rendezvous below Cathkin Peak in April 1958, and gave birth on his home world Meton in 1959 — photographs her onetime supporter called a hubcap, and a pregnancy her son, by one account, has no memory of.
The Council Bluffs, Iowa Molten Metal Fall
Three groups of Council Bluffs residents saw a red object fall or hover over Big Lake Park, and responding police and fire officials found molten metal still too hot to touch; 1977 investigators ruled out the hoax, aircraft and meteorite explanations they tested, and a sample was re-analyzed with isotopic instruments in 2022
The Montana Cattle Mutilation Wave
In 1975–76, sheriff's deputies across five north-central Montana counties investigated more than a hundred reported cattle mutilations amid about 130 helicopter and UFO reports over the same Minuteman missile ranchland — one craft tracked by Malmstrom and Gore Hill radar — including a rancher's field-glass sighting of a window-lined "hotel-size" object near Fairfield recorded in Deputy Keith Wolverton's 1976 book
The Guiyang (Guizhou) Forest Incident
Forest-farm staff report fireballs and a roar like a steam train during a hailstorm on the night of December 1, 1994, and by morning about 27 hectares of pine near Guiyang are found snapped off in four separate zones, while a railway factory five kilometers away loses roofing and a wall and a freight car is moved 20 meters
The Columbia, Missouri Physical Trace Case
Just after midnight on June 28, 1973, James and Vanea Richards watch an oval, silver-white glow hover in the trees beside their mobile home outside Columbia, Missouri, as a limb cracks seventeen feet up; eleven days later physical-trace specialist Ted Phillips and his wife Ginger, en route to visit J. Allen Hynek, photograph, measure, and plaster-cast ground imprints about 0.3 feet deep where a 300-pound reporter's heel sank only half an inch, and Hynek follows them to the site
GEIPAN: France's Official UAP Investigation Unit
Founded May 1, 1977 as GEPAN under CNES engineer Claude Poher, restructured as SEPRA in 1988 through a real funding crisis, and relaunched as GEIPAN in 2005, this Toulouse-based unit is the longest-running government UAP investigation body on Earth, formally classifying 3,381 French sighting cases under an A/B/C/D scale weighted by strangeness and consistency, with just 3.1% still rated genuinely unexplained
CEFAA: Chile's Official UAP Investigation Committee
Founded October 3, 1997 under Chile's civil aviation authority DGAC, CEFAA sends pilot, radar and citizen reports to outside specialists; it lay dormant from 2002 to 2008, was relaunched in 2010, produced the El Bosque, Collahuasi and Chilean Navy helicopter cases, and was renamed SEFAA in 2021
The February 2021 New Mexico American Airlines Encounter
American Airlines Flight 2292's crew radioed a "long, cylindrical object... like a cruise missile" passing over them at about 37,000 feet over Union County, New Mexico, a transmission the airline first said it had no indication of and then confirmed, that FAA controllers did not see on radar, and on which the FBI told one FOIA requester it had no records before releasing four pages to another.
The December 2024 Eugene, Oregon Pilot Sightings
United Airlines Flight 1596's crew, Life Flight Network pilot Joe Buley and a Horizon Air crew radioed Seattle Center about maneuvering lights near Eugene, one red light moving in a "corkscrew pattern," prompting a controller's recorded clearance to "maneuver as necessary... to avoid the UFO out there." Metabunk analysts later matched a United photo and the medevac crew's own video to predicted Starlink satellite flares; the pilots remain unconvinced.
The Andersen Air Force Base 1965–66 Radar Wave
From October 1965 to June 1966, Guam FAA controllers at Andersen AFB logged 24 coded IFF beacon returns with no known source. A KC-135, a C-97 and a C-130 (whose APS-59 radar held one for 20 minutes on June 28, 1966) flew through the indicated positions and found nothing. The Air Force’s electronics analysts concluded that “material (solid) targets are not involved,” and Blue Book filed the series as “Other (False Targets).”
The Mario Woods & Michael Johnson Ellsworth AFB Encounter
Two USAF security policemen say a perimeter alarm at a South Dakota Minuteman silo led to a craft, non-human beings, and hours they cannot account for
RAF Lakenheath Police Helicopter Near-Miss
A police helicopter hunting drones over Suffolk reported being pursued; radar and its own FOI-released video identified a USAF F-15
USS Jackson Tic Tac Encounter
A Navy senior chief testified under oath that a Tic Tac-shaped light he believes rose from the Pacific joined three more before all four vanished; the released footage runs 33 seconds
The Paul Bennewitz Disinformation Operation
An Albuquerque physicist reports unexplained activity over a nuclear weapons storage site — and is fed fabricated documents about alien bases for six years
