The Guiyang (Guizhou) Forest Incident

In the pre-dawn hours of December 1, 1994, forest workers and factory guards on the northern outskirts of Guiyang, capital of China's mountainous Guizhou province, were woken by a deafening roar, a blast of wind strong enough to lift grown men off their feet, and an intense white flash. By morning, roughly 400 mu — about 27 hectares — of pine forest at Duxi Forest Farm's Majiatang section lay sheared off in a discontinuous corridor nearly three kilometers long, trunks snapped at a strikingly uniform height and toppled westward as if, in witnesses' own words, cut by a giant scythe; five kilometers away, a rail-vehicle factory's roof, walls, and a loaded freight car had been battered by the same overnight event. Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Ouyang Ziyuan would later call it a "normal meteorological disaster" — a downburst or land tornado. Guizhou UFO Research Association investigators Hu Qiguo and Wang Huanliang, who walked the damage on foot within weeks, never fully accepted that reading. More than three decades later, one of "China's three great UFO mysteries" remains exactly that.

What the case does align with, more than any standard UAP framework, is the same category of event unexplained atmospheric/aerial phenomena with physical ground traces occupy generally: genuinely anomalous by the standards of 1994-era Chinese meteorological monitoring, but not clearly extraterrestrial, interdimensional, or explicable by mass misperception either.

Background

Guiyang, the provincial capital of Guizhou in southwestern China, sits on a karst plateau at roughly 1,100–1,300 meters elevation, its urban districts wrapped by forested hills and ravines typical of the region's dramatic limestone topography. Guizhou itself has long been one of China's poorer, more rural, and more heavily forested provinces, and in the early 1990s its northern Guiyang suburbs — including what was then simply the forestry land north of the city, later organized into Baiyun District — remained largely agricultural and forestry-industry terrain, dotted with state-run forest farms, small factories, and rail infrastructure serving the province's rail-vehicle manufacturing sector.

Duxi Forest Farm (都溪林场), a roughly 3,277-mu (about 218-hectare) state-owned pine plantation some 15–18 km north of central Guiyang, was one such tract — unremarkable forestry land, at 1,200–1,300 m elevation on rolling hill terrain, worked and monitored by a small farm staff. Five kilometers away sat the Dulaying Guizhou Railway Vehicle Factory, part of the provincial rail-vehicle manufacturing and repair sector. Neither site had any documented history of unusual aerial activity before the night of November 30 into December 1, 1994, and neither the farm nor the factory had any obvious military, aerospace, or research significance that might independently attract attention — a detail investigators on both the meteorological and ufological sides of this case have repeatedly noted as making a deliberate hoax, staged demonstration, or classified-test explanation difficult to construct a plausible motive for.

1994 also sits inside a documented wave of Chinese UFO reporting: the Chinese UFO Research Association, founded in 1980 and already the subject of this site's 1981 Chinese Spiral Mass Sighting case file, was in the middle of a second surge of public and institutional interest in the mid-1990s. The same year produced the Meng Zhaoguo "Phoenix Mountain" incident in Wuchang, Heilongjiang — a claimed close encounter and alleged medical-effects case investigated jointly by the China UFO Research Association and the Beijing UFO Research Association — and the earlier, still-disputed Huang Yanqiu "Flying Man" case in Hebei. Chinese ufological literature has since grouped this trio together as "China's three great UFO mysteries" (中国UFO三大愚案), though, as discussed further in this case file's Historical Precedents section, only the Guiyang incident produced measurable, independently observable physical destruction rather than resting on witness testimony and claimed physiological effects alone.

The Night of November 30–December 1, 1994

The accounts that survive from the incident's immediate aftermath come from a small number of named staff on duty at two separate sites roughly five kilometers apart, and they describe a single continuous overnight sequence rather than one isolated moment. At Duxi Forest Farm's administrative office, deputy director Chen Lianyou and colleague Lan Derong were on night duty when light rain, around 2:30 a.m., turned to hail roughly the size of soybeans — unremarkable winter weather for the Guizhou plateau on its own. Roughly forty-five minutes to an hour later, night patrol staff elsewhere on the farm reported seeing two glowing fireballs, tinged red and green, rotating as they moved through the sky, accompanied by a heavy, rumbling roar that multiple witnesses independently compared to an approaching steam train. At the office, Chen and Lan then reported an overwhelming white flash of light so intense that neither could keep his eyes open, arriving with the same deafening roar. Two further named witnesses at the farm, Jing Fuhe and Wang Mingying, independently reported the same flash from elsewhere on the property.

At almost exactly the same time, five kilometers away, Dulaying Guizhou Railway Vehicle Factory duty officers Luo Weijun and Wang Jun were on checkpoint duty near the factory's Materials Processing Road gate when they, too, heard an enormous roaring sound, immediately followed by a blast of wind powerful enough to briefly lift both men off the ground. Neither officer described seeing the fireballs or flash reported at the forest farm directly — their account is a sound-and-wind experience rather than a visual one — but the timing, roughly 3 a.m., and the shared roaring sound tie their testimony to the same event rather than to an unrelated coincidence.

No named witness at either site claims to have seen a structured object, only lights, a flash, wind, and sound. This is a genuinely honest limitation in the case's testimonial record that this case file will not paper over: everything that makes the Guiyang incident unusual — and everything that makes it hard to dismiss outright — is downstream of what was found the following morning, not what anyone directly watched happen overhead.

What Was Found: The Majiatang Damage Corridor

By daylight on December 1, farm staff discovered that a large section of the Majiatang (马家塘) forest compartment of Duxi Forest Farm had been devastated overnight. Chinese-language sources are consistent, and mutually corroborating, on the core figures: roughly 400 mu of pine forest — a traditional Chinese land-area unit equal to about 666.7 square meters, making 400 mu approximately 26.7 hectares, which this case file rounds, consistent with English-language state-media reporting (China.org.cn) and this case's own listing on this site, to roughly 27 hectares — was destroyed across four discontinuous zones (forest compartments, or linban) within a corridor roughly 3 kilometers long and 150 to 300 meters wide.

The trees themselves were mostly 20–30 cm in diameter and roughly 20 meters tall — mature pine, not saplings. They were not uprooted wholesale but snapped or sheared partway up their trunks, leaving stumps ranging from 1.5 to 4 meters in height standing across the affected zones — the "uniform height" shearing this case's own index-page listing describes, and the detail most often compared, loosely, to a giant scythe having passed through the forest. The severed upper trunks and crowns were found predominantly toppled toward the west. Investigators also noted an odd inconsistency that has never been fully resolved by any single explanation: beneath some of the felled timber, the forest floor's leaf litter was found undisturbed, exactly as it had lain before the trees came down on top of it — a detail hard to square with either a violent, ground-hugging windstorm (which would be expected to scatter loose leaf litter) or with a low-flying object's own downwash.

Secondary Chinese-language accounts additionally describe unusual "claw-shaped" or "dragon-claw" (龙狑) burn or scorch marks discovered at the scene — a detail this case file records honestly but cautiously, since none of the sources reviewed specify who documented these marks, using what methodology, or whether they were photographed or otherwise preserved for independent examination. Gao Dengyi's proposed explanation for these marks — ordinary lightning strikes accompanying a tornado's rotational winds, a phenomenon sometimes colloquially called "rolling ground thunder" (滚地雷) in Chinese meteorological folklore — is addressed in full in the Conventional Explanation Candidate section below.

What Was Found: The Dulaying Factory

The Dulaying Guizhou Railway Vehicle Factory, roughly 5 km from the forest-farm damage corridor, sustained separately documented structural damage the same night. Fiberglass and asbestos-cement roof tiles were stripped from factory buildings; brick perimeter walls were toppled; steel structural pipes and beams inside the facility were reported cut or bent. Most strikingly, a loaded freight rail car — its weight is reported inconsistently across the sources available for this case file, variously as roughly 24 tons, roughly 50 tons, and as high as 60–70 tons combined with its cargo, a discrepancy this case file records honestly rather than resolving with false precision — was found displaced approximately 20 meters along the rail line from where it had been parked and secured. No human casualties were reported at either site, and remarkably, given the scale of the physical destruction, high-voltage power lines running through the affected forest reportedly remained intact and functioning, and no livestock deaths were recorded in the vicinity.

One additional detail, reported in some but not all Chinese-language secondary accounts of the case, deserves an honest caveat rather than either confident inclusion or silent omission: several sources describe a localized magnetic-field disturbance at the site strong enough to interfere with camera equipment used by early visitors, and claims that pine regrowth in the affected zone was dramatically stunted in the years afterward — healthy same-age pines elsewhere on the farm reportedly reaching 10 or more meters where the incident-zone regrowth reached only around 1 meter. This case file could not locate a primary scientific report, dated photograph, or named measuring party for either claim, and treats both as secondary, unverified testimony rather than established fact. Why "Disputed"

The Guiyang (Guizhou) Forest Incident earns a DISPUTED classification because it sits, unusually cleanly, on both sides of the strongest test this site applies to any physical-trace case: is there real, measurable, independently observable damage, and does the leading conventional explanation actually fit that damage without leaving real gaps? Here, the answer to the first question is an unambiguous yes — this is one of relatively few UFO cases anywhere with genuinely substantial, still-referenced physical destruction (a forest, a factory, a multi-ton rail car) rather than testimony alone. The answer to the second question is genuinely contested by credentialed people on both sides, not merely by ufologists against scientists. Ouyang Ziyuan and Gao Dengyi, both career Chinese Academy of Sciences researchers, back a downburst/land-tornado mechanism that is physically well-established in general (this is exactly the phenomenon Ted Fujita's own downburst research made famous). But Li Liangqi, the former head of Guizhou's own provincial meteorological bureau, concedes the province has no confirmed tornado history, and Wang Huanliang's specific objection — that the damage's discontinuous, "jumping" pattern across four separate zones does not match a single continuous rotating vortex's track — has never been directly rebutted with field data in any source located for this case file.

What is not disputed: something genuinely destructive occurred over a compact, well-documented area near Guiyang on the night of December 1, 1994, corroborated by named witnesses at two separate sites five kilometers apart; the physical damage was real, extensive, and never seriously alleged to be a hoax or fabrication by any investigator on either side of the case; and more than three decades of subsequent Chinese scientific and ufological investigation has never produced a single explanation — downburst, tornado, or disc-craft — that fully accounts for every documented detail (the discontinuous damage pattern, the undisturbed leaf litter, the claw-shaped marks, and the total absence of any recovered debris) without leaving some part of the record unexplained.

The single instrumented data point associated with this broader case comes from a separate, later event: on February 9, 1995, Guiyang airport radar reportedly tracked an unidentified object near a Boeing 737 passenger flight (flight 2946, Guangzhou–Guiyang) at 10,000 meters altitude, the object apparently changing shape from diamond to circular and color from yellow to red before vanishing roughly 70 km northeast of the city. This case file treats the February 1995 radar report as a related but factually distinct incident — it occurred more than two months after the forest-farm event, at a different altitude and location, and no source reviewed for this case file connects the two beyond their shared regional context — rather than as direct sensor evidence for what happened at Duxi Forest Farm itself.

Conditions at the time were consistent with a winter storm system moving through the Guizhou plateau: light rain transitioning to soybean-sized hail beginning around 2:30 a.m., with the more dramatic roaring, flash, and wind events reported roughly 45 minutes to an hour later. Guiyang's early-December climate is cool and often damp, with the surrounding karst plateau terrain — steep, forested hills interspersed with valleys — capable of locally channeling and intensifying wind events in ways that flatter, more open terrain does not, a point Gao Dengyi's landspout hypothesis relies on. At the same time, this same complex terrain is precisely why Wang Huanliang and other skeptics of the tornado explanation consider Guizhou's mountainous topography poorly suited to classic tornado formation, which conventionally favors large, flat, unobstructed areas where a stable, sustained rotating updraft can organize. Both readings of the same terrain are defensible; neither is conclusive on its own.

The case's core witnesses were, without exception, ordinary working staff on duty at the two affected sites — a forest-farm deputy director and his colleague, and two factory checkpoint duty officers — not UFO enthusiasts, self-selected witnesses, or individuals with any documented prior interest in anomalous phenomena. None had an obvious motive to fabricate an elaborate account, and their testimony is limited and consistent rather than embellished: none of the primary witnesses claims to have seen a structured craft, only lights, flash, sound, and wind, a notably restrained account for a case that would go on to generate extensive speculation about disc-shaped craft. The subsequent investigation drew on credentialed institutional figures on multiple sides: Chinese Academy of Sciences academician Ouyang Ziyuan (later chief scientist of China's lunar exploration program) and CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics researcher Gao Dengyi for the meteorological reading; former Guizhou Meteorological Bureau director Li Liangqi for a hedged middle position; and Guizhou Academy of Sciences senior engineer Ma Ruian and Guizhou UFO Research Association investigators Hu Qiguo and Wang Huanliang on the anomalous-origin side. This is a case investigated, on both sides of its central dispute, by people with real scientific and engineering credentials rather than by uncredentialed amateurs.
