CENAPRED's Altzomoni camera, joined over time by additional units at Tlamacas and Tianguismanalco and eventually supplemented by privately-run feeds (most visibly the social-media account Webcams de México, which redistributes both CENAPRED's own imagery and independently-hosted webcams), exists to give scientists, civil-protection officials, and the public continuous visual confirmation of the volcano's activity level: ash columns, incandescent ejecta, dome growth, and steam-and-gas plumes, cross-referenced against the agency's seismic, infrasound, gas-spectrometry, and ground-deformation instrument network.

That same continuous, public, unattended video record — running through the night, in infrared and low-light modes, pointed directly at a source of heat, steam, ash, and intermittent incandescence — has turned out to be close to ideal conditions for generating ambiguous footage. A slope-following insect illuminated by an infrared floodlight, a distant aircraft's strobe light, a satellite catching sunlight at the wrong angle, a bright meteor, or simple video compression artifacts around an overexposed bright point can all appear, in a few seconds of grainy, low-resolution footage, as a fast, "impossible" maneuver.
