Origin & History
The Lunar & Atmospheric Conditions page computed distance to the nearest airport of any kind for every case on this site, and found — honestly — that the figure was nearly meaningless: with over 72,000 airports, heliports, and airstrips worldwide in that dataset, almost everywhere on Earth is "close" to one. That page flagged a genuinely selective version of the same idea as its natural next step: distance to restricted military airspace specifically, not any airstrip. This page is that next step.
Restricted military airspace is also the actual, stated reason AARO and the UAP Task Force exist in the first place — their formal mandate is aviation safety around military training and operations, not extraterrestrial investigation. Several of this site's own highest-profile modern cases (the 2004 USS Nimitz encounter, for one) occurred specifically inside a Warning Area during active military exercises, which is exactly the kind of case this page is built to measure systematically instead of anecdotally.
Methodology
Every distance on this page is computed, not looked up or guessed:
- Real coordinates, reused not re-derived. The exact same one-point-per-case coordinates already used by the Water and Nuclear Facility proximity pages.
- Real, source-cited zone data. A curated list of 16 real restricted/special-use military airspace zones — FAA-designated Warning Areas and Restricted Areas, Military Operating Areas, training ranges, and equivalent foreign danger/restricted zones — each individually verified against public sources (FAA/DoD documentation, Federal Register notices, Wikipedia) rather than recalled from memory.
- Real geometry. Great-circle (haversine) distance from each case's coordinate to the nearest zone in the list, reporting that zone's name, designator, and type.
Known limitations, stated honestly, and more significant here than on this site's other proximity pages: 16 zones is a real, first-tier list, not remotely a complete registry of restricted airspace worldwide — the FAA alone designates hundreds of Restricted Areas, Warning Areas, and MOAs across the continental US, and this page currently tracks only the most significant, best-documented ones (several already independently relevant to specific case files). That means the distances reported here are almost certainly overstated relative to a truly complete airspace registry — a case near a real but not-yet-tracked restricted zone will show as "far" from restricted airspace when it may not actually be. This page's numbers should be read as an upper bound on distance-to-restricted-airspace, not a precise figure, until this list grows.

This page's own honesty requirement cuts against itself in an unusual way: a sparse, 16-zone list will systematically overstate distance to restricted airspace, not understate it — the true figure, against a complete registry of every Restricted Area, Warning Area, and MOA worldwide, would show tighter clustering than what's reported here. That means this page's current numbers are a conservative floor on how selective this pattern really is, and expanding the zone list is the single highest-value improvement available to this page specifically.

The same sparse-zone-list caveat above applies even more strongly here — but running the identical 16-zone computation against two much larger independent datasets is still a real, useful check on whether this page's own pattern is at least directionally consistent, not a one-off artifact of this site's 352 curated cases.

Is This a Known Idea?
Yes, directly — this is AARO's own stated core mission. The All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office's founding directive centers explicitly on resolving unidentified anomalous phenomena in and around US military training ranges and airspace, framed first as a flight-safety and airspace-deconfliction problem, not a UFO-disclosure one. Multiple high-profile modern Navy encounters (the 2004 Nimitz "Tic Tac," the 2014-2015 "Gimbal" and "GoFast" videos) occurred during active training exercises inside designated Warning Areas off the US East and West coasts. This page is the first place this site has turned that already-acknowledged pattern into an actual computed distance metric.

Selection Bias in Which Cases Get Declassified
PlausibleA case occurring inside restricted military airspace is far more likely to generate an official record (and eventually a FOIA release or Congressional hearing) than an equivalent civilian sighting over open countryside — meaning this site's own case selection may itself be skewed toward exactly the locations this page measures.
Sparse Zone List (This Page's Own Limitation)
