Origin & History

This site's own Water Proximity Analysis was built to test one offhand observation about the map with real GIS computation instead of a guess. Building it surfaced a second, more pointed pattern while auditing the site's own location categories: an outsized cluster of this site's case files — Malmstrom AFB (1967), Minot AFB (1968), F.E. Warren AFB, Vandenberg AFB, Loring AFB, Oak Ridge, Hanford, Palo Verde — sit at, or immediately adjacent to, real nuclear weapons or nuclear energy facilities. That's not a new observation in UFO research generally (see "Is This a Known Idea?" below), but it had never been run as an actual computed metric on this site the way water proximity was.

So this page applies the exact same standard: no estimates, no hand-picked examples, no research-by-anecdote. It reports a real great-circle distance from every case file and location's actual recorded coordinates to the nearest facility in a curated, source-cited list of real nuclear weapons and power facilities worldwide — ICBM missile wings, weapons design and production complexes, ballistic-missile submarine bases, weapons test ranges, storage depots, and major commercial power plants. The underlying computation is re-run as part of this site's standard post-publish data pipeline every time a location is added or edited, the same living-page mechanism as the water proximity page.

Methodology

Every distance on this page is computed, not looked up or guessed. The pipeline works in three real steps:

  1. Real coordinates, reused not re-derived. This page uses the exact same one-point-per-case incident-site coordinates already computed and verified for the Water Proximity Analysis page, so the two pages can never quietly disagree about which coordinate represents a given case.
  2. Real, source-cited facility data. A curated list of real nuclear facility coordinates, each individually verified against a public source (official agency sites, FAS Nuclear Notebook, IAEA PRIS, and similar) rather than recalled from memory — covering ICBM missile fields, weapons design/production complexes, SSBN bases, weapons test ranges, storage depots, and a representative set of major commercial power plants.
  3. Real geometry. For each location, the script computes the great-circle (haversine) distance to every facility in the list and reports whichever is closest, along with that facility's name, type, and country.

Known limitations, stated honestly: unlike the water page's point-to-nearest-feature-boundary method (measuring to a whole coastline or river, not a single point), this page measures point-to-point — facility-to-case, straight line, no correction for the true size or footprint of a large site like a missile wing's silo field, which can span thousands of square miles around its named base. A case reported "at" a missile wing's named base is almost certainly closer to that wing's actual nearest active silo than this page's own number shows. Second, and more important to state plainly: the facility list aims for genuinely exhaustive worldwide coverage across nine categories, not a "representative sample" — 18 ICBM missile fields (all 3 active US wings plus every identifiable Chinese and Russian missile-division garrison), 4 SSBN submarine bases, 21 weapons design/production complexes, 15 weapons test ranges (including several historical/decommissioned ones, since a case reported there is real regardless of the site's current status), 10 storage depots, 181 of the roughly 190–200 commercial nuclear power sites operating or recently shut down worldwide, 97 research reactors (per the IAEA's own count of roughly 220 operating worldwide, so this remains the least-complete category — smaller/less-documented university and institute reactors, especially in Russia and parts of Asia, are the likeliest remaining gaps), 25 fuel-cycle facilities (enrichment, fuel fabrication, and reprocessing plants), and 12 currently-active uranium mines. The power-plant figure is worth distinguishing explicitly from the commonly-cited "~436 reactors worldwide" statistic, since that counts individual reactor units, not sites, and multiple reactors routinely share one site (Palo Verde alone is 3 reactors at 1 site this page already tracks as a single point) — site count, not reactor count, is the correct unit for a geographic proximity metric like this one, since co-located reactors resolve to the identical distance regardless. Every category short of "every research reactor and mine on Earth" is now close to complete; research reactors and mining are the two areas most likely to still have real, unlisted facilities.

Reading This Honestly

Nuclear weapons facilities are, by design, some of the most heavily instrumented, most heavily guarded, and most frequently overflown-by-restricted-traffic sites on Earth — radar coverage, security patrols, and classification review all mean that anything unusual near one is disproportionately likely to be noticed, reported, investigated, and eventually declassified, independent of anything about the phenomenon itself. A finding that "UAP cases cluster near nuclear facilities" has an obvious rival explanation: nuclear facilities are simply better at generating a documented, declassifiable paper trail than an ordinary field. The Population Density Control Analysis tested the closely-related population version of that same objection directly: population density correlates with this page's own distance figures at r ≈ −0.34 — real, and the stronger of the two proximity pages' correlations, but still explaining only a fraction of the overall pattern.

Cross-Referenced Against NUFORC & GEIPAN

This site's own 352 case files are a small, hand-picked sample — chosen for documentation quality and historical significance, not statistical representativeness. So the same nearest-nuclear-facility computation above was run again against two large, independent datasets this site didn't curate: NUFORC (the National UFO Reporting Center's crowd-sourced US civilian reports, already used elsewhere on this site's Sightings DB) and GEIPAN (France's official government UAP investigation agency, under the CNES space agency, also already integrated into this site's Sightings DB and interactive map). Neither dataset was built with this page's hypothesis in mind, which is exactly what makes them a real independent check rather than the same sample measured twice.

Is This a Known Idea?

Yes — this is the single most-documented correlation thread in UFO research, generally known as the "UFO-nuclear connection." Retired U.S. Air Force officer Robert Hastings spent decades compiling firsthand accounts from missileers and security personnel, published as UFOs and Nukes: Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites (see this site's own Essential Reading entry and the dedicated UFOs and Nukes theory page for the narrative history). In 2010, former missile launch officer Robert Salas and colleagues held a National Press Club conference recounting the March 1967 Malmstrom incident, in which multiple Minuteman ICBMs reportedly went off alert simultaneously during a reported UAP sighting; Salas repeated sworn testimony on the incident before the House Oversight Committee's UAP hearings in 2023. None of that constitutes independent statistical proof of a real phenomenon-level pattern — it is real, on-the-record testimony and a real body of declassified and FOIA'd documents, offered here as honest context for where this page's own computed numbers sit in the wider field, not as validation of them.

Nuclear sites carry radar coverage, trained observers, and formal incident-reporting chains that an ordinary field does not. More sensors and more paperwork near nuclear facilities means more potential documented reports near nuclear facilities, independent of anything about the phenomenon itself. Likely the single largest driver of this page's own pattern.

Remote/Restricted Siting Overlap

Plausible

Nuclear weapons facilities and military test ranges are disproportionately sited in remote, sparsely-populated terrain with restricted airspace — the same conditions (dark skies, unusual aircraft testing, low ambient light pollution) independently associated with more reported sightings generally, a real confound this page's methodology doesn't separate out from a nuclear-specific effect.

Declassification & Selection Bias

Inconclusive

Nuclear-site incidents are disproportionately likely to eventually surface via FOIA or declassification specifically because they were taken seriously enough to generate a formal, retained record at the time — meaning this site's own case list may already be skewed toward nuclear-adjacent incidents before any distance is even computed, a selection effect at the level of which cases exist to measure at all.

Genuine Phenomenon-Level Pattern

The open, unproven possibility motivating Hastings' decades of witness collection in the first place — including specific claims of temporary correlation with missile-guidance-system malfunctions, not just proximity. Nothing in this dataset rules it out, and nothing in it confirms it either; distinguishing this from the mundane explanations above would require a baseline comparison against a random sample of comparable sensitive military sites, which this page does not yet make.

Theoretical Alignment

This page does not argue for or against any theory of UAP origin or intent — it tracks one geographic metric across the site's own data and reports it honestly, including the reasons it might mean nothing at all.
