Origin & Approach
This site's Water Proximity Analysis started as an offhand observation about the interactive map, tested for real instead of asserted. It worked well enough — and was honest enough about its own limits — that it became a template: compute something real from this site's own case data, cite every source, disclose every limitation, and never round a finding up to sound more interesting than the numbers actually support. Six more pages followed the same discipline: Nuclear Facility Proximity, Population Density Control, Restricted Military Airspace, Submarine Cable Proximity, Solar & Geomagnetic Activity, and Lunar & Atmospheric Conditions.
Each of those seven pages stands on its own. This page does something none of them do individually: it puts all seven side by side, cross-referenced against the same two independent, third-party datasets — NUFORC (~147,585 US civilian reports) and GEIPAN (~3,368 French government-investigated cases) — and asks what the whole body of evidence actually adds up to. Some findings replicate cleanly across all three datasets. Some are flatly, honestly debunked. Some are real but explained at least as well by mundane confounds as by anything else. And at least one is currently limited by this site's own data completeness, not by the underlying question.

What Replicates Across Every Dataset
Water proximity is the strongest, most consistently replicated pattern in this entire series. This site's own 352 cases sit at a median of —, NUFORC's ~110,000 geocoded reports at —, and GEIPAN's cases at — — all three independently-compiled datasets, built by different organizations for different reasons, land on the same real-world pattern. Population density tells the same story from a different angle: NUFORC and GEIPAN both sit even closer to real population centers than this site's own curated cases, consistent with population density being a genuine, general driver of report volume rather than an artifact of this site's own case selection.
Neither of these findings is evidence of a phenomenon-level pattern on its own — both have strong, well-understood mundane explanations (people settle near water; more people means more potential witnesses). What they demonstrate instead is that this site's methodology works: real patterns in a small curated sample really do show up again in much larger, completely independent data.
What's Genuinely Debunked
Solar and geomagnetic activity shows no elevation across any of the three datasets. This site's own case dates average an Ap index of — against a 94-year historical baseline of —; NUFORC and GEIPAN both sit at or below that same baseline. The informal, recurring claim that unusual reports cluster on geomagnetically or solar-active days simply does not hold up against real historical data at any scale tested here.
Lunar phase fails the same way. This site's cases average — illumination, NUFORC and GEIPAN both average almost exactly the same — all three sit close to the ~50% a flat, random distribution of dates would produce on its own. The "more sightings near the full moon" claim doesn't show up in this data at any scale either. What the Lunar & Atmospheric Conditions page did find — that most cases occurred under overcast or precipitating skies, not clear ones — independently undercuts a different, unrelated claim: that most sightings are witnesses misidentifying a bright planet or star. That specific mechanism requires a visible sky most cases in this dataset simply didn't have.
What's Real But Confounded
Nuclear facility proximity produced this series' most genuinely surprising result: NUFORC and GEIPAN cluster tighter to nuclear facilities than this site's own curated 352 cases do. A hand-picked "notable historical incidents" list would plausibly skew closer to famous military sites than a raw civilian-report firehose — instead it skews farther. The Population Density Control page's own correlation coefficients (r ≈ −0.34 for nuclear, the strongest of any tested variable) suggest the most likely explanation is exactly that population-density confound, not anything specific to nuclear sites as such.
Submarine cable proximity sits in the same category — a real, moderate pattern across all three datasets that the same coastal-population-clustering explanation already flagged on the Water Proximity page can account for at least as well as anything about undersea infrastructure specifically.
What's Data-Limited, Not Yet Conclusive
Restricted military airspace is the one page in this series where the honest answer is "we don't have enough data to say yet," not "here's what the data shows." A 16-zone list — a real, verified, but genuinely sparse first tier of the hundreds of Warning Areas, Restricted Areas, and MOAs that actually exist — produces large distances across this site's own cases and both independent datasets alike. That consistency across all three is itself informative: it means the large numbers reflect this page's own thin zone registry, not something specific to any one dataset. Expanding that zone list remains the single highest-value improvement available anywhere in this series.
None of this proves or disproves anything about the underlying phenomenon. What it does is exactly what data journalism is supposed to do: replace assumption with computation, replace a single curated sample with independent cross-validation, and report the result honestly whichever direction it points — including the directions that debunk a popular claim, confirm a mundane explanation, or admit the data isn't good enough yet. Two claims (solar activity, lunar phase) didn't survive contact with real data. Two patterns (water, population) replicated cleanly across independent sources. Two more (nuclear, cable) are real but at least as explainable by population density as by anything else. One (restricted airspace) is honestly unfinished. That's not a tidy story, and it isn't meant to be — it's what happens when every claim gets computed rather than assumed.
Shared Standards
Every page in this series follows the same rules, which is what makes comparing them meaningful in the first place:
- Real data, cited sources. Natural Earth, GeoNames, TeleGeography, GFZ Potsdam, NUFORC, and GEIPAN — every dataset is named, sourced, and linked, not summarized from memory.
- No estimates presented as computation. Where a figure can't be computed exactly (GEIPAN's partial dates, NUFORC's ungeocodable locations, ERA5 weather at NUFORC/GEIPAN scale), this series states that limitation directly rather than filling the gap with a plausible-sounding number.
- Independent cross-validation, not just a bigger sample. NUFORC and GEIPAN weren't built for this site's hypotheses — they're compiled by a civilian nonprofit and a French government agency for entirely different reasons, which is exactly what makes agreement across all three meaningful.
- Live, not a snapshot. Every page re-reads its own generated dataset on load and updates automatically as new cases are added — including this page, which reads all seven at once.
