The Baghdad Battery

In 1936, workers excavating near Khujut Rabu, a small locality roughly two miles northeast of Baghdad and immediately adjacent to the ruins of ancient Ctesiphon, recovered a small, unglazed clay jar. Inside it sat a cylinder of rolled copper sheet, closed at one end, and inside that a corroded iron rod — the whole assembly held in place by plugs of bitumen (natural asphalt). Two years later, in 1938, Wilhelm König, an Austrian archaeologist then serving as laboratory director at the National Museum of Iraq, published a short paper proposing a startling explanation: that the jar was a galvanic cell — an ancient wet-cell battery, conceivably built to electroplate gold onto silver objects, more than a millennium before Alessandro Volta's 1800 invention of the electrochemical cell. Functioning modern replicas filled with an acidic or alkaline electrolyte genuinely do produce a small, measurable voltage, a fact confirmed independently by engineers, television myth-testers, and peer-reviewed researchers alike. What is far less settled — and roundly rejected by essentially every working archaeologist who has studied the object — is König's own interpretation: no wiring, electrode, or single electroplated artifact from the period has ever been found alongside it, and a set of closely comparable jars excavated nearby, containing no metal at all, held only the decomposed remains of rolled papyrus or parchment documents. Most archaeologists read the "battery" as a document or ritual container instead. A small number of credentialed researchers, writing in peer-reviewed venues across more than three decades, have nonetheless kept taking its genuine electrochemical properties seriously as an unresolved and possibly intentional feature of its design — not as an ancient power source, but as a possible therapeutic device or a mechanism for ritually corroding a document sealed inside it. This file is a case study in a real, persisting archaeological research question hiding underneath a much louder pop-culture myth.

This file sits in a different position than most of the "ancient advanced technology" claims catalogued elsewhere in this site's Ancient Records archive. Most of those files — the ice-free Antarctica claim attached to Piri Reis's 1513 world map chief among them — involve a real, well-documented artifact onto which a much later, entirely unsupported interpretive leap has been grafted, with no credentialed specialist in the relevant field ever taking the fringe reading seriously. The Baghdad Battery is messier, in an informative way. The core popular claim — that Parthian or Sasanian Mesopotamians built and used this object as a functioning electrical power source, whether for electroplating or general technological use — is rejected by essentially the entire archaeological profession, for reasons this file documents in detail below. But the object's own physical, testable electrochemical behavior is not itself in dispute: functioning replicas genuinely generate current, a result independently reproduced since 1940 by an engineer, a television myth-testing team, and, most recently, a 2026 peer-adjacent academic reconstruction. A narrow, genuinely live research question — whether that electrochemical behavior was an intentional, if non-electrical-in-purpose, feature of the design, built into a ritual or therapeutic object rather than a coincidental byproduct of ordinary bitumen sealing — has kept a handful of credentialed researchers publishing on this object across more than three decades, entirely apart from the pop-culture "ancient battery" myth their own work is regularly, and inaccurately, cited to support.

Sensor & Instrumentation Detection Profile

As with every entry in this site's Ancient Records series, there is no modern sensor record of the object in use; the entire evidentiary record consists of the excavated jars themselves, the metalworking and sealing technology available to their Parthian or Sasanian makers, and the modern replication experiments researchers have since built to test what that assembly can and cannot do. The vessel's own construction is straightforward and well understood: a rolled sheet-copper cylinder, closed at its base, roughly 9 centimeters tall and 26 millimeters across, its seam left unsoldered and not watertight; an iron rod suspended inside it, not touching the copper; and bitumen plugs sealing both ends of the assembly inside a plain, unglazed ceramic jar roughly 13 to 15 centimeters tall (about a dozen broadly similar vessels are known from the region, varying somewhat in size and detail, not one single unique object). Bitumen was an entirely ordinary Mesopotamian sealant by this period, used for millennia in construction, waterproofing, and vessel-sealing across the region — its presence here requires no exotic explanation on its own.

The modern "instrumentation" record is really a sequence of independent replication attempts, each testing a different piece of the puzzle. Electrical engineer Willard Gray, working at General Electric's Pittsfield, Massachusetts plant, built the first known reconstruction around 1940, after a sensationalized description of König's find appeared in the March 1939 issue of Astounding Science-Fiction; filled with a copper-sulfate electrolyte, Gray's replica produced a modest but real current for a short time. The Discovery Channel program MythBusters built ten hand-made replica jars for its 29th episode, broadcast March 23, 2005, and using lemon juice as an acidic electrolyte measured roughly half a volt from a single jar and about 4.3 volts from ten jars wired in series — enough to visibly electroplate a small copper token, which the program's producers accordingly rated the underlying electrochemistry "plausible," a verdict about whether the assembly can function as a wet cell, not about whether it was ever actually used that way in antiquity. Most recently, independent researcher Alexander Bazes published a 2026 reconstruction in Sino-Platonic Papers arguing that the unglazed clay body itself functions as a porous separator in the cell, and that an alkaline rather than acidic electrolyte produces a stronger, more stable current — over 1.4 volts, higher than any prior reconstruction — while proposing the entire assembly was designed to corrode a document wrapped around the iron rod as a deliberate ritual mechanism, not to generate usable power. None of these tests, including Bazes's, claims to have found any ancient wiring, terminal, or electroplated object corroborating deliberate electrical use; they establish only that the vessel's physics work, which is a different, much narrower claim than the popular "ancient battery" story built on top of it.

Environmental & Geospatial Context

The jar was recovered from the immediate vicinity of Ctesiphon, one of the ancient Near East's great imperial capitals — seat first of the Parthian Empire and then, after 224 CE, of the Sasanian Empire that succeeded it, sited on the Tigris a short distance southeast of modern Baghdad. This was not a marginal backwater but the administrative, religious, and commercial heart of Iranian-speaking Mesopotamia for the better part of nine centuries, a cosmopolitan crossroads of Zoroastrian, Jewish, Christian, Manichaean, and older Mesopotamian religious traditions living in close proximity. That religious density matters directly to this file's central debate: the wider archaeological record of Parthian- and Sasanian-era Mesopotamia is unusually rich in exactly the kind of small, sealed, inscribed ritual objects the scroll-storage theory proposes this jar to be — incantation bowls inscribed with protective Aramaic spells, buried face-down under thresholds; small metal or clay containers holding rolled curse tablets, prayers, and amulets, deliberately sealed and interred as offerings to underworld deities; and, as discussed in detail below, several directly comparable copper-cylinder-in-jar assemblies excavated at neighboring sites containing the physical remains of rolled papyrus documents rather than any trace of an electrical apparatus. A culture already producing large quantities of sealed, buried ritual-text containers by the time this jar was made is the environment the mainstream reading places it in; a culture that had independently discovered electrochemistry with no other surviving trace of the knowledge anywhere in its enormous textual record is the environment the "ancient battery" claim requires, with essentially nothing in the wider archaeological or literary record of the region to support the latter.

The specific religious landscape of Sasanian Mesopotamia sharpens the scroll-storage reading further. The empire's official religion was Zoroastrianism, centered on fire temples and a body of orally transmitted and, increasingly across this period, written liturgical material, but Ctesiphon and its surrounding towns also hosted large, continuously resident Jewish and Christian communities — the Babylonian Talmud itself was substantially compiled by rabbinic academies operating within a few days' travel of this exact findspot across the very centuries this jar was likely made. Aramaic incantation bowls, a genre of small inscribed ceramic vessels written to trap or repel malevolent spirits and buried under the floors of ordinary households, are among the most common small portable ritual objects recovered anywhere in Sasanian-era Mesopotamian archaeology, attesting to a well-established, widespread local practice of using sealed, inscribed, buried vessels for protective and religious purposes that had nothing to do with metallurgy or electricity. A small sealed jar containing a rolled written document, produced by a culture that was independently and prolifically producing exactly this category of object elsewhere in its material record, requires no exotic explanation to account for.

Modern excavation conditions have compounded the uncertainty around this specific object in a way that a well-documented site like Topkapı Palace never experienced. St John Simpson, a curator in the British Museum's Middle East department, has noted that the original 1936 excavation and its context were not well recorded at the time — a common problem for fieldwork conducted under the more limited resourcing and record-keeping standards of 1930s Iraqi antiquities administration — leaving later researchers unable to fully reconstruct exactly where in the broader Khujut Rabu/Ctesiphon complex the jar sat, what it was found alongside, or in what precise stratigraphic layer. That gap is itself informative: much of the popular "ancient battery" literature treats the object's context as settled and simply omits this problem, when in fact the poor original recording is one of the reasons later specialists have had to revisit and revise even basic questions like its date.

Observer Credibility & Occupational Profile

Wilhelm König was a real, credentialed member of the Iraqi antiquities establishment of his era, not an outside amateur: an Austrian archaeologist and painter who, from 1931, served as an assistant and later laboratory director within the Baghdad Antiquities Administration, working directly with the excavated and collected holdings of the National Museum of Iraq. He had, by his own account, previously observed genuinely gold-plated silver objects from ancient Mesopotamia in the museum's own collection, which supplied his working hypothesis that a functioning ancient battery might explain how they were made — a reasonable inference to test, not a claim invented from nothing. He returned to Vienna in February 1939 after a bout of blood poisoning and published a memoir of his years in Iraq, Im verlorenen Paradies: Neun Jahre Irak ("In Lost Paradise: Nine Years in Iraq"), and separately produced plaster castings of Iraq Museum objects that remain part of Berlin's Vorderasiatisches Museum collection today. That is a real, verifiable professional record — but it is also, notably, a record with no training in electrochemistry, metallurgy, or experimental physics behind it; König's 1938 paper was a short hypothesis piece in a general-science journal, not a peer-reviewed archaeological or scientific study, and it was never followed by his own controlled experimental testing of the claim.

The modern research record contesting and refining that hypothesis is, by contrast, built almost entirely from within relevant specialist fields. Elizabeth Stone, professor emerita of Old World archaeology at Stony Brook University and a field archaeologist with decades of excavation experience across Iraq, told National Public Radio in 2012 that she did not know a single working archaeologist who believed the object functioned as a real battery, adding pointedly that "the people who argue it's a battery are not scientists, basically." Paul Craddock, for decades the British Museum's leading authority on ancient metallurgy and head of its scientific research into artifact conservation, has stated flatly that no irrefutable evidence has ever supported the electroplating theory, and that the region's genuinely documented gilding methods of the period were conventional gold-leaf and mercury-amalgam techniques, not electrochemistry. St John Simpson's British Museum curatorial work on Sasanian material culture underlies the object's dating revision. Brad Hafford, an archaeologist and curator at the University of Pennsylvania's Penn Museum, has argued in detail for the object's likely ritual function based on directly comparable regional finds. And on the narrower, more genuinely open question of the object's real electrochemical behavior, Paul T. Keyser published his analgesia hypothesis in the peer-reviewed Journal of Near Eastern Studies in 1993, and Alexander Bazes's 2026 reconstruction appeared in Sino-Platonic Papers, a University of Pennsylvania-affiliated academic series. Every substantive voice reshaping this object's interpretation over the past ninety years, in other words, has held a real, checkable credential in archaeology, metallurgy, ancient Near Eastern studies, or a directly relevant technical field — a very different credibility profile than the popular "ancient aliens"-adjacent television and internet content that most often repeats König's original, untested 1938 hypothesis today.

Historical Precedents & Archive Matches

Two kinds of precedent bear directly on this file. The first is internal to this site's own Ancient Records archive: the Baghdad Battery joins the Piri Reis map, the Tulli Papyrus, and the Dropa Stones as a real, physically or textually documented artifact around which a specific "lost advanced technology" reading has grown up independent of, and generally rejected by, the specialists who actually study it — though, as this file's Theoretical Alignment section above already signals, it departs from that pattern in one important respect: unlike an ice-free Antarctic coastline or a never-recovered papyrus, this object's disputed physical property (that it produces measurable voltage) is not itself contested, only its ancient purpose and intentionality.

The second, more directly probative precedent is external and archaeological: closely comparable copper-cylinder-in-jar assemblies, excavated under better-documented conditions at neighboring sites, that turned out on excavation to contain the physical remains of rolled documents rather than any trace of an electrical apparatus. University of Michigan archaeologist Leroy Waterman, directing excavations at Seleucia-on-the-Tigris across 1927–32 and again in 1936–37, recovered several bitumen-sealed vessels containing bronze cylinders wrapped around surviving plant matter and papyrus fragments — the single strongest piece of direct comparanda for the storage-vessel reading, because in these cases the organic contents that a hypothetical "Baghdad Battery" electrolyte would have long since dissolved were actually recovered intact. Khujut Rabu sits in the immediate vicinity of the ruins of Ctesiphon, near the present-day town of Salman Pak, roughly southeast of Baghdad along the Tigris — a stretch of the river that had hosted, at different points across nine centuries, the Seleucid, Parthian, and Sasanian capitals in close succession, leaving an extraordinarily dense archaeological landscape layered across a relatively small area. Iraqi Antiquities Administration field staff recovered the jar during excavation work there in 1936. Secondary accounts of exactly how Wilhelm König himself first encountered the object differ in their specifics — some describe him examining it directly as part of the 1936 field excavation in his role overseeing the Antiquities Administration's laboratory work, while others describe him identifying it somewhat later among previously uncatalogued material already sitting in the National Museum of Iraq's own collection. Both versions agree on the essential chronology that matters most for evaluating the claim: excavation in 1936, and König's galvanic-cell hypothesis published two years later, in 1938, in the general-interest German science journal Forschungen und Fortschritte under the title "Ein Galvanisches Element aus der Partherzeit?" ("A Galvanic Element from the Parthian Period?") — the question mark in König's own title a detail rarely preserved in later popular retellings, which tend to state the battery interpretation as settled fact rather than the open hypothesis König himself framed it as.

König's own published description of the object, translated from the German, describes "a vase-like container of bright yellow clay, the neck of which had been removed," inside which "a copper cylinder was stuck, held in place by asphalt," itself containing "an oxidized rod of iron... held in place by a sort of stopper of asphalt." He measured the vase at about 15 centimeters high, the copper cylinder at 26 millimeters in diameter and 9 centimeters tall, and noted that the copper was "fairly pure copper with traces of zinc, lead and iron" — consistent with ordinary period Mesopotamian coppersmithing rather than any specially refined or unusual alloy. König's Career and the 1938 Hypothesis

König proposed, based on the object's assumed findspot context, that it dated to the Parthian period, roughly 250 BCE to 224 CE, and speculated that the assembly functioned as a galvanic cell — possibly used to electroplate a thin layer of gold onto silver objects, a technique he believed could account for the genuinely gold-plated silver artifacts he had observed elsewhere in the museum's holdings, or alternatively for some form of therapeutic electrotherapy. He did not, so far as the surviving record shows, build and test a working replica himself, publish a controlled experimental study, or propose a specific reconstructed circuit connecting multiple jars together (a step that would in any case have required wiring or terminals never actually found with the object). His 1938 paper is, in that sense, closer to a suggestive short hypothesis note than a fully worked scientific claim — a distinction the pop-culture "ancient battery" story built on top of it has rarely preserved.

Comparanda: Seleucia and Ctesiphon's Scroll Jars

The strongest evidence bearing on what these jars were actually for comes not from Khujut Rabu itself, whose original excavation records are acknowledged to be thin, but from the better-documented parallel excavations conducted at the two neighboring ancient cities across the same general period. At Seleucia-on-the-Tigris, Leroy Waterman's University of Michigan expedition recovered several vessels of directly comparable construction — ceramic containers holding bitumen-sealed bronze cylinders — in which the cylinders' actual contents survived well enough to be identified: rolled organic material and papyrus fragments, not any trace of an electrode pair or wiring. At Ctesiphon itself, the parallel German-American excavation that Ernst Kühnel worked on recovered further sealed bronze-roll assemblies, similarly interpreted from an early date as containers for written material rather than any electrical apparatus. Together, these two better-recorded, closely comparable assemblages form the empirical backbone of the scroll-storage reading: not an abstract alternative theory invented to counter König, but a reading grounded in physically recovered document remnants from the very same regional tradition of vessel construction the Khujut Rabu jar itself belongs to.

This passage is worth reading closely, because König's own description already contains the physical detail his later popularizers most often omit: an unsealed, non-watertight copper seam that would let any electrolyte poured into the vessel reach both metals at once rather than keeping them electrically isolated in separate compartments the way an intentionally designed cell normally would. König published this as an open question — his title ends in a question mark — describing a physical assembly that resembles known battery components in a loose, general sense (two dissimilar metals, an acidic-compatible sealant, a container) without describing the deliberate electrode-isolation engineering a purpose-built ancient battery would need to actually function as a reliable, reusable power source rather than a one-time curiosity.

The Comparanda Reports

Leroy Waterman's preliminary excavation reports from Seleucia, published through the University of Michigan's Kelsey Museum of Archaeology across the early 1930s, remain the single most important primary counter-document to König's hypothesis, because they describe physically recovered organic remains — not an absence of evidence, but a positive, contents-in-hand finding — inside directly comparable sealed metal-and-clay assemblies from a site only a few kilometers from Khujut Rabu and Ctesiphon, excavated under considerably better-documented field conditions than König's own find.

British Museum curator St John Simpson has separately revised König's own proposed dating.
